Choosing the right filter for your koi pond

Choosing the right filter system is perhaps the most important aspect of creating a successful koi garden. Not only does the filter ensure that your pond water remains clear, it also removes the organic waste, ammonia and nitrates from the water, which unless removed will result in the build up of harmful bacteria which could kill your fish. Maintaining the water quality will ensure that your fish have a healthy habitat in which to live.

To ensure that you select the correct koi filter for your pond you need to consider the following factors:

Pond size

Ensuring that you select the right size filter for you koi pond is absolutely essential. The most important factor is to choose a filter which has a greater filtration capacity than the volume of your pond. If for example you have a 10,000 litre pond, then a filter with a maximum capacity of 10,000 litres would struggle to keep your pond clean working flat out. Remember that you can never over filter a pond, whereas you can under filter, so always choose a filtration system which is at least one and a half times the volume of water in your pond, especially if the pond is highly stocked.

To calculate the volume of your pond multiply the length times the width times the depth in metres (L x W x D). Multiply the result by 1000 and you will have the volume of your koi pond in litres. So if your pond is approximately 10 metres in length, 4 metres wide and 1 metre deep, the calculation would be: 10 x 4 x 1 = 40 x 1000 = 40,000 litres. On that basis you would need a filtration system capable of handling 60,000 litres (i.e. one and half times the total volume of your pond).

Mechanical & biological koi pond filters

Once you’ve established the size of your koi pond and the required filter size, you need to ensure that you choose one that offers both mechanical and biological filtration.

The mechanical filtration process will remove the organic waste from your koi pond which can result in the build up of harmful bacteria. Once removed, the biological filtration breaks down the nitrates and ammonia in the pond water into less harmful compounds creating a healthier and safer environment for your fish.

Pump feed, or gravity fed koi filters

Deciding on a pump, or gravity fed filter is a decision which needs to be made at the construction stage of your koi pond, as installing a gravity fed filtration system at a later stage will require a considerable amount of work.

With a pump fed koi filter, the pump is placed inside the pond and pumps the pond water into the filter. Whilst installing a pump fed filtration system is easier, as the pump is located in the pond and is therefore pumping dirty water, it will require more regular cleaning.

With a gravity fed filtration system you need to instal a drain in the bottom of the pond, which is connected to the filter. The water is filtered and then pumped back into the pond. One of the main benefits of a gravity fed koi filter is that as the pump is only pumping filtered water, there is comparatively very little maintenance.

The above are some of the main points to consider when purchasing a koi filtration system. For further advice on a suitable koi pond filter for your garden, please contact a member of our support team who will be happy to help.
