Koi fish eat a lot more and therefore create a lot more waste. The waste, if left untreated, will result in the build up of toxins which are harmful to your koi fish. If you have a koi pond then you should aim to filter the entire volume of the pond every hour, to an hour and a half. Most normal pond filters are unable to cope with such high levels of filtration which is why you will require a dedicated koi pond filter such as the Oasis Vortec filter, or Specialist filter.
