What size pond pump do I need?

Ensuring that you get the right sized pump for your pond is essential.

To do this you need to calculate the volume of water in your pond. This is done by multiplying the length, width & depth of your pond in metres and multiplying the figure by 1,000 to give you the volume of water in litres.

So for example, if your pond is 4 metres long, by 3 metres wide with a depth of 1 metre, the approximate volume is 12,000 litres (4 x 3 x 1 = 12 x 1,000 = 12,000).

With this figure in mind you can determine the correct pond pump size required to circulate the volume of water in your pond.

As a rule of thumb it is advised that for a highly stocked pond the water is filtered every one and a half hours; for a low stocked pond it should be filtered every two hours.

So, using the above example, if you have a 12,000 litre high stocked pond you will need a pond pump with a flow rate of 8,000 litres per hour (12,000 / 1.5 = 8,000).
